Randomly decided to check in after years and see talk of Doordie and Amel. Lots of fun memories! Arguably my first long time character, Narwyn, ended up closely aligned with Amel as his protege.
Doordie was one of the best RP's I ever played with. His stories, with his character Amel, were amazing. Rich, deep, complex. I hope Doordie is doing well! You have a really great Uncle!

Slightly off topic, but something Bonesly wrote struck me as interesting. Is it generally accepted that use of darkness as a spell is something a good aligned character wouldn't wish to be associated with? Sure, I can understand harm and gate being off limits to good aligned characters, but I've always regarded casting darkness in an area as just another occasionally useful tactic and never gave it a second thought that it would be seen to imply anything else.
Tempting as it was, I decided not to go round hitting people with a crowbar. Registered Member #650

I think that darkness sentiment might date back to the time before the Cataclysm. Then shadow spells, darkness spells, etc were considered to be connected to Zentarus and thus evil.

From what I understand, everything related to shadow and darkness is somewhat related to Shar in the FR, who is evil and was the one to create the Shadow Weave (the proper Weave's counterpart). But Thain is only vaguely set on the FR.

I assume Darkness is a tactic, personally. I don't consider it good or evil. (Edit: Although during the shadow war, that would have been different for different reasons.)
And with the Gate tweaks to call beings from other planes, I don't assume those to be alignment-based, either.
And, what SK says below about communication.

Thain has a little bit of history called the 'Shadow War'. It's less to do with Shar, and more to do with Zentarus, one of the Thain deities. Esh can tell you what happens to people who throw Darkness spells around with abandon.
Back to the original point of the thread - It depends on the situation. Normally, I'd be more than happy for someone to try a smite Evil on Kasith, find it works, decide she is therefore evil, and carry on smiting. However, there are some sets of RP that I'd prefer not disrupted. As always, communication is key to cooperation.

I haven't read through the debate, but I wish there was one alignment. "Character", and you built from there.
[edit]I take that back. I wish there were two alignments. Red and Blue, locked in an eternal struggle to overcome each other by either stealing each-other's flags or overdoing each-other's frags. There are no morals, no philosophical debates. Just Red on Blue action.
