Randomly decided to check in after years and see talk of Doordie and Amel. Lots of fun memories! Arguably my first long time character, Narwyn, ended up closely aligned with Amel as his protege.
Doordie was one of the best RP's I ever played with. His stories, with his character Amel, were amazing. Rich, deep, complex. I hope Doordie is doing well! You have a really great Uncle!

That's not exactly right. Metallics are the "Good" guys, and chromatics are the "Evil" guys (though either could be a shifter of any alignment). But, in quite a few areas of the island, the "Good" guys are the hostiles and the "Evil" guys are the friendlies.
When the FAQ on this topic was written, I think the staff was looking at the issue through a good-aligned prism. What about the evil NPCs factions that are otherwise neutral to PCs?
I think Galen is right that there should be some difference between PvP hostility and NPC/guard hostility, but I think it should go further and depend on the NPC faction in question. Raven's Watch shouldn't take kindly to a metallic wyrmling showing up, while it may tolerate a chromatic one.
And, likewise, I don't think it's fair that PCs in an evil-aligned monstrous form are the exception to the PvP consent rule, when PCs in a good-aligned monstrous form get a pass.
About the other forms, three months from now, I will have forgotten which ones are KoS, and which ones aren't. Some shifter will be approaching in panther form or badger form or bear form and I'll have to look at the FAQ again to figure things out. In the past, I've done that with both panthers and wolves. Prav would just shoot (or stab), but I just didn't react at all. I'm just saying that a laundry list of "acceptable" creatures puts the burden upon everybody else to remember what those forms are.
I know that the list was made to allow for some more nature-oriented RP, but we have plenty of wolf pack RP going on and they aren't on the list. I think that shows there's not really any need for the list at all. Non-humanoid forms could be KoS and I don't think it would negatively effect RP.

Bonesly wrote ... As Galen said, the floaty names and appearance models are your clue here that there's a difference between Brown Bears and Grizzlies. Brown bears are the ones that actually are non-hostile in the Crossroads South and may even save the life of low-level adventurers who would otherwise be overwhelmed by kobolds.
I've never liked this distinction in-game; grizzlies and brown bears are the same species in our world, and are both very, very dangerous. This is just my personal opinion, but I think this makes no sense at all.
Not so bothered about the real life distinction, but the way I've always looked at it is that if they are present as hostile on the island, then the baseline for a reaction is going to be hostile (with the exception of faerie dragons, where reception is hostile because they're just annoying! ).
While the most frequently seen brown bear on the isle is neutral, go only slightly further abroad anthere is a hostile one that spawns in.

I just can't see the guards accepting that a brown bear will differentiate between a kobold and a child. Just because they've learned not to attack adventurers doesn't mean they're 'friendly' - it probably just means they've been conditioned, since all the ones that attack adventurers would have died out. I don't see why anyone would assume that they wouldn't attack a human, under the right circumstances.
Friendly brown bears at the CR is one of those things I have trouble arguing with rationally, because the entire concept feels like it's straight out of Disneyworld. I keep expecting the bears to segway into a choreographed song about the meaning of life, while brotherhood guard dance in the background.

MPCs, NPCs, PCs and other Cs...
I cannot blanket approach any particular class. Even in our own world, the actions of people and guards differ so greatly from person to person. The Staff have done a good job in making the categories and guidelines put down so far.
Personally I tend to treat every character and situation differently. For instance, my character is an MPC, she is a Gold dragon disciple and Plane-Touched(Fire) and if you feel the need to attack her, treat yourself.
As for other MPCs, my character tends to judge on actions and intentions rather than blood. She would usually assist most guards in their duty if they are attacked or attacking, unless there is significant reason for her not too. Yet its hard to say she will ignore very type of one MPC and not another.
PvP-wise, I find it hard to single out situations. My MPC would give all to defend an Empyrean Aurora, yet may not intervene if it was a Raven Watch guard, perhaps even assisting against the guard if the person was of the right standing to her but not always.
I find it strange how to instantly know the differences between some hazy boundries. The feathery wings, angel wings or averiel wings? How do you tell the difference? Thrar is an Elven Celestial Knight or an Averiel? How many characters are going to be more familiar with divine messengers than the knowledge that there are Averiels out there?
We can all pass thought and ideals over it but generally, if its not 'normal' to the world then I'd say it is an MPC and if you feel a need to attack it or hug it, well... Thats your characters call to be decided with yourself and the other player at the given time.
*steers back to KindGuy's original questions* I feel we have drifted abit away here.
I see all 'Common Races' (Half-Orc, Halfling, Human, Elf, Half Elf, Dwarf and Gnome) as non-MPCs with the majority of Subraces being accepted.
Some exceptions may include Drow, Half-Drow, Duegar, Aasimar, Tiefling, Dragon Disciple/Kin, Planetouched and Genasi.
Drow/Half-Drow - Notoriously evil by legend and myth Duergar - Notoriously evil by legend and myth Tiefling/Aasimar - Appearance, actions and location may play a bit part in how they are treated for better or worse. Dragon Disciple/Kin - Treatment may vary to location, appearance, actions and blood type. Planetouched/Genasi - Appearance, actions, a Fire Genasi may for example not be liked if they end up accidently torching something or due to their appearance.
Rule of thumb - How would peasants with their superstitions, fears, fairytales and beliefs see these beings? Would they see these creatures as blessing or curse?
