Randomly decided to check in after years and see talk of Doordie and Amel. Lots of fun memories! Arguably my first long time character, Narwyn, ended up closely aligned with Amel as his protege.
Doordie was one of the best RP's I ever played with. His stories, with his character Amel, were amazing. Rich, deep, complex. I hope Doordie is doing well! You have a really great Uncle!

Sound? Hmm, that's right I remember a long time ago I had sound issues which for some reason interfered with graphics... that was thuroughly strange, never did figure out why.(this was on an old OLD comp, before the days of NWN, so nobody assume that comp had any relationship to the current situation)
As for the heat issues, I don't know how hot it is, but I have a policy of not overclocking anything.

Ah... all good suggestions above. You should probably make sure "shiny water" is off, and then change your sound setting to... um, somebody here knows what the good setting is for this purpose. Or you could just turn sound off altogether. Then play some more.
Right before you start, place your hand on top of your case, and maybe feel around the top for any hotter spots. That should give you a feel for what the normal temperature of your case is. Then, if the system crashes again, feel the top of the case again. It is almost certain to be warmer, but the real question is how hot is it? There's not much I can do to help you decide if it's "too hot", but use your judgement. If you think it might be a heat issue, then let us know and there are a number of things you might do.
The first would be to just take the side panel off your case to allow better airflow. Also, you should use a vacuum to remove any built up dust that might have collected in the vent and fan areas. That's just a start, but typically, if you take the side off the case, that will resolve any heat-related issues. You could do that and then try playing again.

Try this... choose Sound Options / Advanced / Miles Fast 2D Positional Audio; make sure EAX and Hardware sound are unchecked. Might be your sound card and nothing to do with the video...

Edit: The first would be to just take the side panel off your case to allow better airflow. -- If you take the panel off, I'd setup a small fan to blow on the cards... the "enclosed" case is there to create a sink/source airflow drawn over the cards (intake vents usually at the front and exhaust vents usually driven by power-supply fans). By breaking the enclosure you break the designer's sink/source intended airflow, so you ought to replace it by putting a fan directed at the components since open radiant heat convection may be inadequate (thus a little fan flow helps).

Oddly enough, I usualy leave the side of the case off my comp for other reasons... so way ahead of you there
*peaks around his monitor at the inside of the case* There's very little dust build up, it's actualy pretty clean all things considered.
Also, since the shiny water thing first started happening, I've left that feature permanently off, I've also got shadows turned down and all that, so about the only thing that's graphics intensive that's an option that I have selected is grass.
Edit: trying out Bonesly's suggestion right now, perhaps I'll go blow up a few things with Rorry in the hopes that the extra graphical strain will cause something to happen, if it doesn't(it happened like 7 times last night when I went into the spider caves) then hopefully that's a good sign! Okay, try this: Go to your Display Properties -> Settings -> Advanced -> Troubleshoot. Disable "Write Combining." If that doesn't work, then move the hardware acceleration slider over one notch.
