Randomly decided to check in after years and see talk of Doordie and Amel. Lots of fun memories! Arguably my first long time character, Narwyn, ended up closely aligned with Amel as his protege.
Doordie was one of the best RP's I ever played with. His stories, with his character Amel, were amazing. Rich, deep, complex. I hope Doordie is doing well! You have a really great Uncle!

For a long time now my graphics card has been giving me problems, the previous one I had had issues with the shiny water, but this is a whole new problem. Every now and then, at no particular regularity, NWN will freeze up(and the mouse cursor will still be free to move about the screen) when left for several minutes it'll minimize to the desktop, alternatively alt-tabbing to another application, or simply hitting the window key, will minimize NWN, revealing an ATI error box. While a rarer occurance, something else occasionaly happens which locks up the entire comp. The occurances seem to be totaly spontanious, occuring for no apperent reason. At this point there seems to be no solution but to restart the entire comp(a naturely annoying thing to happen if I'm in the middle of combat... or a conversation) I've got the comp sitting here running NWN on its MINIMUM graphics settings, and the graphics card on its minimums aswell... everything is a blurry mess, but so far the issue hasn't cropped up more than once in about 3 hour's time... naturely, this is not an acceptable state of affairs, and I wonder if anyone knows an alternative solution? Perhaps an alternative set of drivers? or how much older drivers might be necesary to resolve the issue?

Did this problem just start, after running okay for a while? It sounds like you replaced your graphics card after problems with the old one, only to have the new one not work either. Have you ruled out other issues, like RAM size? (Upgrading to 1 GB can solve a multitude of problems.) I take it you have updated to the latest graphics drivers? Do you have the minimum amount of background processes running?
I have a Radeon x700 with 1GB RAM, updated the drivers 3-6 months ago, and I can even run NWN2 with no problems. I have every background process shut down except my home LAN services.
Does this problem occur outside of gaming, or with other games? If the problem is easily reproduced, a trip to the shop might be in order.
Hopes this gives you some ideas, or let us all know more info. Good Luck!

No, this problem has been occuring for MONTHS, but with each new graphics driver update, the problem keeps recurring more often. Though it only started after a driver update a long time ago. This comp has had kind of an odd history, technicly all that remains of the origonal comp is the hard drive, RAM(had an extra stick added way before this problem occured bringing it to 1GB), and graphics card. The previous graphics card I mentioned was an ATI 9000 which has played musical computers in the past(been transplanted back and forth) I forgot when exactly this started happening, it's only become unbearable two updates ago(three or four months I think) I haven't really ruled out anything as a cause... but the fact of the matter is this issue ONLY occurs in Neverwinter Nights. NWN2 has no issues AT ALL. There is no other application I've had any issues with graphicswise, it seems to love Ghost Recon, all the unreals and half-life games. I've installed a whole slew of different games in an attempt to find if similar problems would crop up anywhere else... I might try swapping my ATI 9000 back into this comp to see if that solves the problem... Though I suppose it's possible that something during an NWN patch may have caused it... I've run out of ideas really.

For some reason I seem to remember NWN crashing with some of the newer video cards. But being not much of a technical junkie I'll leave this topic for the experts. Hope you sort your problem out

What you're describing sounds a lot to me like issues with left over files from old versions of the video drivers. I've seen that sort of thing reported often enough that it's apparently somewhat common.
I'd advise uninstalling all of your video drivers, and then reinstalling the latest version. But be sure to clear out ALL of the files associated with the drivers. You'll have to do some research into it, but there are a number of (I believe free) tools available to help get rid of all remnants of the drivers for you.

Well I stripped my graphics driver files out of the comp to the best that I could find, and replaced them... so far so good... Though now that the graphics are set to something aproaching reasonable, I realize I made some terrible colour choices on some of my characters... *ponders*
Edit: Well, comp locked up again, so much for it being fixed...
