I've must pile on the support for people who, for whatever reason, struggle to produce properly spelled, grammatically-correct dialogue. The speed at which one needs to type in a lot of RP situations is difficult for many people for a variety of reasons. Insisting that they bother with anything more than avoiding conspicuous abbreviations would hurt RP more than help it. It might be wise for people who struggle with getting their words out not to play hyper-loquatious characters like Jinxx , but they shouldn't feel that they need to type as quickly and well as Ally to have fun.

Few things ruin immersion for me more than a native speaker of English who simply doesn't care how bad their spelling and grammar are.
I mean, the occasional "it's" vs "its" or "your" vs "you're" won't really bother me; nor will easily mispelled words or occasional grammar mix-ups; I do this too, all too often. Even if somone has terrible typing, poor grammar, and is very slow, I'm happy to be patient and work with them if I see reasonable effort on their part to help me understand their intent. If the person is trying their best, it's good enough for me.
But if someone attempts to save two key-strokes by typing "u" instead of "you" or "r" instead of "are", I lose interest in RP'ing with them rapidly.

It's the most common mistake when typing quickly, I find. Keen does it all the time, and it's the word I have to go back and type over more than any other word. Logically, it's because the 'T' and 'E' key are much closer together on the keyboard than the 'H'. Plus, the 'H' is typed with the other hand.

I hate to say it, but I completely agree with that sentiment. It just seems lazy.
But the occasional mistakes such as 'teh' never bother me - it would be silly to expect everyone to type perfectly and properly all the time. Not to mention, some characters themselves don't speak properly for whatever reason.

I agree, but I have to say, it's not something I see in game much at all. I can't even recall the last time I /did/ see somebody use IM shorthand like that in game.

I have to agree with you there Amber - questionable typing , laziness .
On the same (kinda) subject, constantly correcting errors can be worse than making them in the first place. I find that unless the mistake really distorts the original meaning it's better to just leave it there than start with the *the's (just for you Vaedryan!)

Awww... shucks! And I agree with you on constant correcting.... I don't do it, not because of laziness, but because my fingers trip-up often enough that there'd be * comments every other line.
But.. enough self-deprecating comments from me on my typing... Sorry to derail things. Carry on! [ Edited 06:38:45 PM 03/07/06 ]

I can say easily that spelling and grammer mean little to me, although I like to see the effort, as it seems only polite to try and present yourself as well as you can. But as with others, I am dreadfully woefull at times with miss-spells etc especially when I am trying to be quick at typing all of us are human and lattitude is easily given and received
I can tell people that OOC chatter during events of mine /will/ cause me to leave and go and RP with others As a DM I spend my time making the world come alive for people, and there are "tells" available for those who wish to chat OOC. I find it rude if people make OOC comments while I am trying to make an event and such withdraw from what I had planned
As to other points I broadly agree with Yas, Bonesly, Kal, Xerah, Ally and the others

I agreee with everything you say BWA except for the last one... going on adventers are fun not to mention its better with more people to RP with.... In the beginning I started Thain out as a PG gamer more then a RPer but eventually it took me time to adjust to gain the love for RP. So sometimes things take some time to settle in.

Grammatically correct is for descriptions, not for dialogue. How many people do you know always use grammatically correct dialouge?
Any writing class will tell you that the dialogue is the exception to the rules, as lots of slang, incorrect grammer and sentence structure are involved in most verbal communications.

I have to say I agree with a some points and ofcourse disagree with other points you made, BWA.
As stated above by almost everyone else, spelling and grammar in a language other then their primary one doesn't come as easy to people. As long as they don't abrevviate (sp?), as Amber said, I don't see a problem. *Thinks back of all the spelling and grammar errors he made*
I do disagree with the point that sitting at the fire is more fun or better for rping then wandering around over the isle. I've had very nice rping at the fireplace and very nice events that started at the Trade, but I find that exploring the isle or going out with a group from point A to point B is just as much fun in RPing, especially if you are diverted to point C and have to run to point D because there is a dragon at your tail And you don't have to be smashing monsters to be on the road. You can just be traveling to one of the numerous locations Thain has to do some exploring or just for fun.
And it's also much more fun if you head out and bump into people, new or familliar, and rp your way into the group and what they have planned, then to sit and wait at an empty fireplace untill people show up.
